Awarded by a jury of film critics (Paola Casella, Andrea Curcione, and Marco Romagna) “for the brave, mimetic ability to insinuate itself inside the haunted heart of the abyss bordering the fall of a democracy, without ever losing the proper distance from which to observe the scary collapsing of events. The direction works on ethics and on the essential role of documentaries as a fundamental tool to try and understand reality without judgement. The film’s indisputable political, anthropological and social relevance is inextricably linked to the handling, primarily human, of the complex filming phases, and to the rigorous gaze avoiding any easy speculation of the outcome by choosing instead to analyze and explore in depth its causes.”

The phoenix Prize is awarded for the best documentary in the Top Ten TV and Best of Cinema Documentary competition series and this year goes to the American artist and director Michael Premo for his documentary HOMEGROWN. The award is sponsored by German TV network phoenix.
